Distracting and frustrating hitters through an array of rituals on the mound was part of his arsenal. A 20-game winner five times with a lifetime ERA of 3.10, Perry no-hit the Cards while with San Francisco on September 17, 1968. An outstanding competitor, he was the first hurler to win the Cy Young Award in both leagues. he is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
