In 1977, he had the distinction of being the youngest person appointed to be a judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta. In 1996, he attracted international media attention when he ordered an investigation of political corruption and financial mismanagement on the reserve in his jurisdiction. Wrote the best selling book, Bad Medicine A Judge's Struggle for Justice in a First Nations Community in 2010, and Bad Judgement, the Myths of First Nations Equality and Judicial Independence in Canada in 2014.
