Alex Hesse
Alex earned a master's degree in science in Germany and an MBA in Australia. In the interim she was employed by a publishing firm, the Olympic Games and an art gallery. What does all that add up to?
She moved to Salt Lake City with no job prospects, took one look at the Leonardo, or what would become the Leonardo — a former library building waiting to become a museum — and realized it was the nexus of her career and education.
Like Hesse, the Leonardo has struggled to identify itself. It doesn't fit neatly into any description, any more than the museum's namesake himself. It's a museum, but of what? Science? Art? Political, social and environmental issues? All of the above?
"I often say this museum is built in the image of da Vinci in the sense that he looked at the world as a collective whole," says Hesse. "Our museum offers experiences to inspire people to do the same thing, to look at the world around them and be curious and then express that creativity in their own way."
