Ruksana is a city guidebook author, award-winning journalist, magazine publisher, and editor and writer who has established a successful career relocating from India to the United States and relocating again from the east to the west coast. All while building on the quality of her life experiences and pursuing personal and professional success. When she arrived in the US in 2006, she couldn’t seek gainful employment or even establish a bank account. But in less than two decades, she has turned that completely in her favor.
Today, she is the author of Around the World in Los Angeles (Reedy Press, August 2024), publisher of Traveler and Tourist digital lifestyle magazine (bimonthly, six issues annually), and an award-winning journalist who has received recognition for her diverse journalistic work from several professional organizations. Her bylines have appeared in such national and global outlets as Fodor’s Travel, Business Insider, Stanford Social Innovation Review, Education week Market Brief, Diversity Professional, and many more.
Her work as an editor and writer have also earned her several diversity and leadership fellowships. She has spoken on more than 50 podcasts, presented at industry events and to students, judged industry competitions, and has been quoted as a travel expert in such trusted global publications as Fodor’s Travel, Sherman’s Travel, Boston Globe, MSN.com, The Points Guy, among others.
Through trial and error, taking cues from her surroundings, rinsing and repeating till she perfected her process, Ruksana learned the hard way to tackle introductions, networking and relationship building when she sometimes was the only person in the room that looked like her or had people question her capabilities simply because they couldn’t relate to her background. Despite no social or cultural circles to turn to, or academic or professional networks to tap into, she has built a successful communications consulting business.
